(Upcoming) 2022 Spring, 2021 Spring, School of Design, Carnegie Mellon University
Instructor: Dina El-Zanfaly, TA: TBD
The course is open to graduate and undergraduate level students across disciplines. Just as we shape environments around us, they also shape our experiences and senses. In this course, we will look at how we can create physical and digital interactions between humans and environments to augment our senses. To support our hands-on projects, we will look at both the phenomenology and the temporality of human experiences and interactions. We will also explore and introduce new roles of computational design and making in embodied sense-making, including human perception and cognition. Students in this class will be working in groups to create installations in space that could be controlled by human actions or wearable pieces.
12 units, Section A, TTH 2:00 PM – 04:20PM, at MM 107, School of Design, Carnegie Mellon University.
Instructor: Dina El-Zanfaly, TA: Danny Cho
This studio is about design, behavior, and people’s understanding in physical, digital, and hybrid environments. The course comprises practical projects investigating, understanding, and materializing invisible and intangible qualitative phenomena, from intelligence to social relationships, through new forms of probe, prototype, speculative design, and exhibit. We will cover two units; each will result in a project. We will use an exploratory research-through-design approach to create these projects.
Module 1: How could we create presence in remote environments using computational tools to enable social interactions?
Module 2: How does intelligence shape our experience in a physical, digital, or hybrid environment?
2021 Fall, 2020 Fall, 2019 Fall, School of Desing, Carnegie Mellon University
Instructor: Dina El-Zanfaly, Daphne Peters and Kyuha Shim
In this course, we introduce concepts, methods, and practices that form the basis for interaction design. Projects for this course will focus on concepts, methods, and conventions of the design process with an emphasis on form and interaction. We will encourage you to explore your creative potential by simultaneously building breadth through exposure and depth of expertise through direct application to project work. You are entering a culture of design with its disciplinary skills, methods, vocabulary, processes, relationships, values and contributions.
